As Easter Approaches Be Careful of Salmonella

As children around the country anxiously await the arrival of the Easter Bunny and the delicious treats the bunny brings, parents need to be aware of a health risk that typically occurs around Easter. That health risk is the spread of salmonella. The infection seems to be spread this time of year due to the handling of baby chicks, many of which are given as gifts or viewed at petting zoos at Easter time.

The CDC has reported that 81 people in over 20 states became sick around Easter time last year after contracting Salmonella from chicks. The infection can cause diarrhea, fever, and vomiting in humans. It is typically transmitted in children by the touching of a bird and then putting ones hand in their mouth. Always make sure that if your child touches a chick or any animal that they immediately wash their hands thoroughly. The use of antibacterial lotions can also be a good source of prevention.
