Walgreens Pharmacy has been ordered to pay $31 Million Dollars to the family of a 79 year old man who died as a result of the misfilling of a prescription. The pharmacist who filled the prescription was employed by Walgreens, despite his addiction to pain medications and other serious problems which put consumers at risk Jurors properly determined that the only way to change the enviroment at Walgreens and to prevent similar incidents from occurring was to punish the corporation financially. This is the exact reason why our judicial system allows for punitive damages in such egrigious cases as this one.
