Today, the Associate Press reports that the number of cancer-related deaths has dropped for the second year in a row. Since 1930, the number of deaths each year has continued to climb until 2002-2003, where a small drop in deaths was first seen. Statistics were just released for 2003-2004, indicating a substantial decline in deaths due to cancer.

A second year of decrease proves the decrease in 2002-2003 wasn't just a fluke of statistics.

"It's not only continuing. The decrease in the second year is much larger," said Ahmedin Jemal, a researcher at the organization.

Cancer deaths dropped to 553,888 in 2004, down from 556,902 in 2003 and 557,271 in 2002, the Cancer Society found

The increase in research, preventive measures and early detection has been credited for the decrease, not to mention the general decrease in smoking and other risky behavior.

As the general public becomes more informed through their health providers and the media, more and more people are recognizing the value of screenings and other preventive measures. Early detection and improved treatment are helping people survive when cancer strikes.
