Over the years our office has handled a variety of contaminated food cases for our clients who have suffered severe injury as a result of exposure to various food borne bacteria. Listeria, Samonella, E-Coli and bacteria that can cause botcholism are all common culprits of bacteria found in food; Salmonella being the most commonly acquired bacteria. It is important for anyone who believes they may have been exposed to a bacteria from food to preserve the product so it can be appropriately tested to confirm the exposure.

Persons infected with Salmonella may experience a variety of symptoms and illnesses. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in more severe illnesses and potentially can be fatal.

For those infected by the Salmonella bacteria, the most common course of treatment involves monitoring hydration status and IV therapy to correct electrolyte imbalance or restore intravascular volume. Antibiotics are recommended only for individuals at high risk of invasive disease or who are immunocompromised or very young children and include ampicillin, amoxicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), cefotaxime, and ceftriaxone.

Recently the Dole Fresh Fruit Company announced the recall of cantaloupes in the Eastern U.S. and Quebec due to potential health concerns related to the Salmonella bacteria. ConAgra Foods Inc., also announced last Wednesday that it would recall all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter made at its Sylvester, Ga., plant. based on the same concerns. Federal officials have linked the peanut butter to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened almost 300 people nationwide --

Also, the US Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall for the products the Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast baby food which may be contaminated with a bacteria which can cause botulism, another form of food poisoning.
