Train Crash and Explosion Leads to Evacuation and Shut Down of Kentucky Highway

A train derailment in Shepardsville, Kentucky has resulted in a chemical explosion and the subsequent evacuation of local residents as well as the shut down of a nearby highway. The CSX train was approximately 80 cars long.

The blaze produced a massive column of black smoke in the mostly rural area. Television footage showed several blazing cars stacked across the rail lines and flaming liquid flowing down ditches from the mangled tanker cars.

The crash was the second train accident in Kentucky in the last two days.

On Monday, four runaway rail cars struck two parked locomotives in central Kentucky, catching fire and spilling a chemical that prompted a limited evacuation.
