With the high price of gas remaining a continuous concern for most Americans, the sale of small cars has dramatically increased. Car buyers should be aware however that with the purchase of a small vehicle comes the increased risk of serious injury should a car accident occur. Crash test ratings for subcompact cars , show that even the safest subcompact cannot overcome its inherent size and weight when compared to midsize cars and larger vehicles such as SUV"s.Fatality rates for drivers in multiple-vehicle crashes are higher for subcompacts than for every other vehicle category -- 83 deaths per million registered vehicles, more than double the average for all sizes of cars and trucks.

If in the market for a subcompact, make sure you become familiar with all safety equipment, including all optional equipment, such as side airbags, which can dramatically improve ones chances of avoiding serious injury shouls an accident occur.
