There is an informative blog post by attorney Paul R. Kiesel, Esq., from California concerning the substantial risk we all face while driving, of being in an accident with an uninsured driver. In Ohio, like in California, it can be foolish to rely on the assumption that another driver will have adequate insurance or necessarily maintain insurance at all.

State law in Ohio requires insurance in order to drive a motor vehicle but the state minimum requires just $12,500 in coverage to be legal. When a driver is injured in an car accident and the injuries are substantial, $12,500 will hardly cover the hospital bill. Accordingly, it makes good sense to add underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage to you own insurance policy. UM/UIM coverage is relatively inexpensive when added to your existing liability policy and it provides protection to guarantee that if you are in the unfortunate circumstance of being injured in an accident, you have coverage where the driver who caused the collision does not have insurance or maintain adequate insurance to cover his or her liability.
